Super Bowl commercials: Doritos is offensive, Betty White rocks!

“KEEP YOUR hands off my mama, keep your hands off my Doritos.”
The winning punch line is up on the sleeves of Super Bowl fanatics, who vote it the best commercial running during Super Bowl 2010. The others topping the list of best commercials are Google’s ‘How to impress a French woman’, and Snickers ‘Betty White Plays Football’.
Now what is it about the kid-slapping-mama’s-boyfriend ad that has struck a cord with the viewers making it the best Super Bowl ad of 2010? Here are the good and bad reviews about the ad:

DORITOS AD: BLACK HUMOR?
An African origin man comes holding a flower bouquet. He knocks on the door of his girlfriend and she welcomes him into the house. Her son is watching TV and eating Doritos chips. The man walks in, sits on the couch and steals one Doritos chip from the kid. The kid slaps the man on his face, “Keep your hands off my mama, keep your hands off my Doritos” While some say that the commercial is “hilarious” there are few others who term it as “culturally offensive and disrespectful”. On social networking sites, some are calling it “racist”, “black humor” and that the “commercial is so much wrong that it couldn’t get any wronger!” Another viewer said, “The Mom doesn’t teach her child manners and the kid has no respect for adults. So what was the commercial about? Was it a lesson in how to sell chips using degradation and disrespect?”

Here we have those who liked the ad: “The whole thing was supposed to be funny and most of you are missing the point. They are not advocating hitting adults or disrespecting elders. They are trying to show that to the little boy his doritos are just as important as his momma.”

GOOGLE: HOW TO IMPRESS FRENCH WOMAN
The ad having no actors, no dialogues, no scenes and no drama, is being touted as the best ad for its simplicity. The ad starts with a Google screen – on which somebody’s typing how to impress French women—gets all the results that he needs – best churches in France to chocolates and then the air tickets to France!
The ad speaks a million words without saying anything – practically!
Here are some reviews: The Kellogg School rates Google’s ad the best in Super Bowl XLIV; ads from Focus on the Family and the U.S. Census are ranked the worst. Google earned top marks for its “How to Impress a French Woman” ad, winning the sixth annual ever-popular Review.
Jeff Bagley, creative director for the Riester agency says the ad is “simple, elegant and told a wonderful story through the power of google.”

SNICKERS- BETTY WHITE PLAYS FOOTBALL
Betty White Snickers Commercial!
In the Snickers ad, a cranky Betty White turns into a young guy ready to play ball after eating a Snickers bar. The Snickers commercial featuring the 88-year-old actress playing football was the most popular advertisement during the Super Bowl.

The tagline for the commercial is “You're Not You When You're Hungry. You'll need to watch the ad for yourself, just to see exactly what it has to do with Betty White!”

In the Mars' Snickers ad, a guy having a bad touch-football game plays like the former Golden Girl - and is played by her in the commercial - until he eats a Snickers bar, which transforms him back into his normal pigskin-loving self.
"Obviously, we were very, very concerned about portraying a brand like Snickers in the most positive light," says Carole Walker, head of integrated marketing communication at Mars. "It's three years later, we've done our homework. We've done our research. We were absolutely not nervous about the campaign in any way. "
This year's ad featured Betty White and Abe Vigoda in a rough-and-tumble football game that ultimately gets both of them tossed on their fannies. It won USA
Today's 22nd annual exclusive Super Bowl Ad Meter real-time consumer testing of how much they liked the commercials as they aired.

"I have an 86-year-old mother, and I think even she would like that (Snickers ad)," says Ad Meter panelist Carolyn Hansen, 59, a manager at Country Financial in Bloomington, Ill. "It wasn't vicious. It was funny. Betty White is iconic — she does everything."
