Local guide: Public transport to and from Super Bowl XLV

On Super Bowl Sunday 2011, traffic around Cowboys Stadium will be a major issue, as over 100,000 fans arrive for the big game. Arlington, Texas, has always had traffic issues, as the city has no public transportation system. I count myself among the many Metroplex sports fans who have spent countless hours stuck in Arlington traffic before and after games.

The traffic issues arise because Arlington's entertainment district, which includes Cowboys Stadium, Rangers Ballpark, and Six Flags Over Texas, are all neighbors to each other, with Interstate 30 serving as the major artery. On Super Bowl Sunday, many of the surface streets around the stadium will be closed or rerouted for fans, so using area public transportation can help avoid all of the traffic headaches.

Fans who choose not to drive will be able to use the Trinity Railroad Express (TRE) on game day. The TRE train line is a Dallas/Ft. Worth partnership, and runs between both cities. On Super Bowl Sunday, fans can purchase a $20 pass to ride the TRE to the Centreport Station near DFW Airport. From there, a shuttle bus will take riders to and from Cowboys Stadium before and after the game.

The TRE is also offering a "Super Bowl weekend" pass, good from Thursday, February 3, 2011 through Sunday, February 6, 2011, which will allow fans unlimited rides between downtown Ft. Worth and downtown Dallas. With team rallies and the NFL Fan Experience among the events being held in each city in the days leading up to the game, the $30 pass (which includes a collectible Super Bowl lanyard and holder) can be very useful. TRE passes can be purchased online at www.sbxlv.clickandpark.com beginning on January 17, 2011.

Fans attending the Super Bowl can also take advantage of private parking lots around the stadium that will shuttle them to the game. Some of the more reputable lots offer parking spaces at ParkingHub.com.
