If history is any indicator, the Pittsburgh Steelers have an excellent chance to win Super Bowl XLV. The Steelers’ six Super Bowl titles are the most of any team. They also own seven AFC championships. The Steelers won four Super Bowls in the 1970′s, and they have come alive again early in the 21st century with titles in the 2005 and 2008 seasons. NFL odds makers have listed the Steelers at +600 to win Super Bowl XLV. You can also bet the Steelers at +300 to win the AFC championship. Want more bang for your buck this postseason? This Steelers defense is reminiscent of the one that carried Pittsburgh to its most recent Super Bowl win. The Steelers lead the NFL in scoring defense and rank second in total defense with 14.5 points and 276.8 yards allowed per game. Pittsburgh has been nearly impossible to run against, leading the league with 62.8 rushing yards allowed per game. The Steelers rank 12th against the pass with 214.1 yards allowed per contest. That’s pretty respectable considering teams are forced to throw more on the Pittsburgh stop unit due to a lack of success on the ground.
This ferocious unit is led by safety Troy Polamalu and linebacker James Harrison. Few players in the NFL have a nose for the football like Polamalu, who finished tied for second in the league with seven interceptions. The hard-hitting Harrison notched his third-straight double-digit sack season with 10.5. Led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers finished the regular season ranked 12th in scoring and 14th in total offense with 23.4 points and 345.2 yards per game. They ranked 11th in rushing and 14th in passing offense with 120.2 and 225.0 yards per game respectively.
Big Ben had a strong season despite missing the first four games of it serving a suspension. He completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 3,200 yards with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions. With Santonio Holmes moving on to the Jets, Roethlisberger had to find a new go-to guy. That guy turned out to be speed demon Mike Wallace. After hauling in 39 passes for 756 yards and six scores in 2009, Wallace exploded to catch 60 passes for 1,257 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2010. He averaged a ridiculous 20.9 yards per catch.
Third-year running back Rashard Mendenhall posted his best season yet as a pro, rushing for 1,273 yards and 13 touchdowns. His ability to grind out tough yards is a big reason why the Steelers are a legit Super Bowl contender. Pittsburgh is just 1-3 this season against the remaining teams in the AFC playoffs, having split with the Ravens and having lost to the Patriots and Jets. Still, with home field in the divisional round, and with plenty of experience on the roster from the 2008 Super Bowl team, the Steelers are showing decent value at +600.
If you believe defense win championships, the Steelers look to be the best choice to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. With a 3-1 performance in the Wild Card round, Jimmy Boyd and his faithful followers showed a profit for the seventh straight week on the pro gridiron. Make sure you’re playing his expert NFL picks for continued success through the Super Bowl. Regulars remember his side and total sweep on the Saints and the Under in last year’s Super Bowl.
