Duxbury and Cardinal Spellman won their Eastern Massachusetts football playoffs on Tuesday and will play in the Super Bowls on Saturday at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.
Rockland, Weymouth and Scituate fell short in the semifinals, ending strong seasons.
Duxbury’s Kane Haffey threw for a touchdown and ran for another as the Green Dragons beat Dennis-Yarmouth, 19-7. Junior running back Henry Buonagurio also ran for a touchdown. The Dragons will play Concord-Carlisle in the Division 2A Super Bowl.
The Weymouth Wildcats rallied from a 15-point deficit to forge a halftime tie, but it was all Bridgewater-Raynham after the break Tuesday night as the Wildcats lost, 34-22, in Div. 1A.
Scituate High football’s first playoff appearance since 1979 did not go as planned Tuesday night as the Sailors were routed, 41-14, by Beverly in Division 3. Scituate turned the ball over four times in the first half and trailed, 28-0, at the break. Beverly scored on its first four possessions, Scituate committed turnovers on its first four possessions, and the Sailors could not climb out of a 28-0 halftime deficit.
In Division 3A, Cardinal Spellman (12-0) is headed to its first Super Bowl since 1992. The Cardinals battled a tough Hamilton-Wenham squad and the penalty bug to walk away from Reading High School with a 28-16 victory. Spellman jumped to a 14-0 lead with relative ease, as running back Branch racked up 133 yards in the first half with two touchdowns, but Hamilton-Wenham could fought its way back before Spellman slammed the door. The Cardinals will face Holliston on Saturday.
Holliston advanced to the showdown with Spellman by beating Rockland, 35-20. The speedy, spread offense of the Panthers proved to be too much for the visiting Bulldogs. Rockland’s Mike Driscoll finished his senior season on a high note, carrying the ball 28 times for 161 yards and a touchdown.
