EMass Super Bowl Results

Duxbury 35, Concord Carlisle 13
Football season has come and gone for high schools in Massachusetts. Yesterday saw the Super Bowls played for each division in EMASS. We had one relatively local winner for coastal SE Massachusetts, and a couple of SE Mass teams who did their level best.

Here's who won what, who beat who, and how it went down:

Gloucester 34, Bridgewater-Raynham 13

This is pretty much a repeat of last year, where the Fishermen kids beat B-R by 3 touchdowns. Kids from B-R of this era will awaken to nightmares of Gloucester kids slapping them around.

Joseph Avila had a pair of TDs for the G Unit. The game was over about 6 minutes into the third quarter. Gloucester's last defeat was at the hands of Duxbury in the 2008 Super Bowl. Many of those children conceived at Gloucester High in the last few years have never seen the school lose a football game.

Everett 31, St. John's (Danvers) 7

John "The Million Dollar Man" DiBiaso threw three touchdown passes to Matt Columbo. Manny Aspirilla also banged in a TD run, and Gilly DeSouza kicked a field goal.

I don't know if the Masachusetts single-season record for touchdown passes includes the playoffs... but if it does, DiBiaso owns it with at least 43. Unless he's like 5'7", look for him at a big college soon.

St. John's sort of snuck into the playoffs with 4 losses, including one to St. John's in Shrewsbury. They got a very nice bus ride to Foxboro out of this.

Northeast 38, Brighton 14

I took the L on this game, choosing Brighton in a nail-biter.

Instead... Mike Corss ran for a touchdown and caught a pass for one. Bobby Novello (2 TDs), Donato DiPietrantonio, and Brandon Sullivan also scored for the Golden Knights. NE scored 5 unanswered touchdowns.

Brighton has been in the Super Bowl 4 times in the last 5 years, so it stands to reason that they'll get another crack at Northeast at some point in time.

Mansfield 29, Reading 26

Mansfield notched a thrilling comeback win over a team that should be the Engineers or the Railroad or something.

A seemingly game-clinching interception by Reading went down, and Reading took a risk, throwing the ball from their own 2 yard line. Dan Gilmore picked it off at the 20 and took it to the 2 yard line. Jamel Marshal bulled it in for the winning score.

Marshal had a pair of rushing scores, and Jeff Hill had 191 yards receiving to go with touchdowns of 47 and 68 yards.

Beverly 28, Somerset 20

Somerset blew a 20-7 lead to lose to a team with a girl's name.

Beverly scored 3 unanswered touchdowns from midway through the 2nd quarter, and Somerset suffered a second half shutout.

Beverly took the long way to the Super Bowl, losing their first 5 games of the season. Either the coach did a great job, they got some players back, or whatever...but nice job, Beverly!

Jaron Spear has 2 touchdowns and like 148 yards rushing for Somerset, who I was rooting for.

Shawsheen 20, Blue Hills 6

Shawsheen's first appearance in a Super Bowl since 1978 was just what the doctor ordered for them, as they won the Big Kahuna over a very game squad from the Blue Hills.

Steve Reynolds had a touchdown and two interceptions for Shawsheen.

Holliston 21, Cardinal Spellman 7

Holliston has been stomping ass all season, and Brockton's favorite Catholic school was just the next clown out of the car for the Holly Jolly Kids.

Spellman just got battered, They were unable to get a single rushing yard in the first half, while Holliston's Kevin Curry stepped to 182 rushing yards and a TD.

Holliston lost the Super Bowl last year to Austin Prep, so this one feels oh so good.

Duxbury 35, Concord Carlisle 13
Duxbury High School wins the Division 2A Super Bowl, giving it to Concord-Carlisle in the Old Country Style for a 35-13 final score.

Duxbury simply could not be stopped. Using a dual-quarterback offense that often veered into a Wildcat formation, Duxbury crip-walked up and down the field against the overmatched Patriots. The Green Dragons threw bombs, they threw short routes, and they blocked punts and pounced on them in the end zone. They asked for no mercy, and showed no quarter.

Concord-Carlisle was no joke. The impressive George Craan (pronounced "Chron," which is pretty cool) bulldozered his way to 149 rushing yards, many of which came with Green Dargaons hanging/bouncing off him. The QB, Peter George, made several key throws, one of which I recall got C-C out of a 3rd and 10 from their own 6 yard line. The game was close at the half.

They shut Duxbury out in the first quarter. Duxbury then pinned Concord deep in their own end, Denis Maguire blocked a punt, and Reilly Naton pounced on it for a score. Concord drove down the field and answered, but Duxbury then started the Air Show.

Boom! 40 yard strike from Matt O'keefe to Matt Hallisey. Bang! 9 yards, O'Keefe to Andrew Buron. 14-7, Duxbury

Concord then got the ball late in the first half. They drove the length of the field, trying to score before the second quarter expired. 4th and 1 on Duxbury's 11 yard line.... Duxbury snuffed them, and took a 14-7 into the halftime festivities.

Two rich towns, well-equipped bands, gorgeous cheerleaders, enough fans of the other games played at Foxboro either showing up early or sticking around late.... people watching is fun at halftime. Good snacks, too.

Thrid quarter: Peter George throws a TD pass to Max Barrett, after a lot of George Craan running over Deluxebury kids. The PAT failed. 14-13, Duxbury. Craan is unstoppable.

39 seconds later, Duxbury fans are enjoying a Kane Haffey touchdown pass to Matt Hallisey. Duxbury went down the field in no time, mostly on Haffey's 33 yard bomb to Hallisey. 21-13, Duxbury.

Concord then got a second 4th down play brick-walled by Duxbury. Even up in the stands with a fat buzz on, I could see Concord-Carlisle's spirit break. After that, Concord was the easy whore of Mr. Touchdown USA, and Duxbury was the man behind the facemask.

40 yard touchdown, O'Keefe to Webber. Faked PAT, Tyler Hannon to the sweetly-named Seamus Connelly. Joe Guilfoile had a 33 pass reception on that three play drive as well. 29-13.

Concord could have rallied, but Duxbury instead closed out the tension on a 39 yard bomb from Haffey to Don Webber. Ballgame, 35-13.

Matt Hallisey and Don Webber rooled for Duxbury. Hallisey had 117 yards through the air and collected a touchdown, while Webber had 124 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Duxbury quarterbacks Kane Haffey and Matt O'Keefe collectively passed for just shy of 300 yards and four touchdowns. The defense made two terrific 4th down stonings of the overmatched Concordians.

Duxbury finishes the season as the undefeated Division 2 Champs. They rule SE Massachusetts with an iron fist. They are the almost-certain #1 overall team when next season begins. Names like Haffey, Webber, Naton, O'Keefe, and Hallisey have gained immortality in the halls of Duxbury High School, where Duxbury legends like Ellen Smithee, Stephen Bowden and Stacey Monponsett once walked.

Big ups go to Coach Dave Maimaron. He is 63-10 since taking over at Duxbury, with 3 Super Bowls and and undefeated season. I can honestly say without a bit of hometown bias that, if Bill Belichick died tomorrow, I would not only be comfortable seeing Mairmaron take over the head coaching job of the New England Patriots... but i wouldn't be comfortable with anyone else having the job.

OK.. that's a bit of hometown bias. Who cares?

Yay Duxbury Green Dragons!!!!!!!!!
