Super Bowl Sunday - A Marketing Day Or Part of American Culture?

Super Bowl Sunday has been talked about as being such a great day in American culture, that some have even discussed the opportunities to make this day a national holiday. Is this a little bit over the edge? Is Super Bowl Sunday that important? Or, is the day of the biggest football game of the year just a huge marketing day? Bottom line, America needs Super Bowl Sunday, here's why.

First of all, getting your family together around the television to watch any sporting event is a tough thing to do. So why does this football game draw so much attention? What other event in sports draws people to watch a game, throw a party, wear your favorite teams sports apparel, and get excited for a couple hours of football. The pre-game hype and behind the scenes insights into all the players lives and how hard they have worked to reach the most important game of their life, is part of what makes this day such a great day.

Second, the day of the big game has become a day not only for men, but has now become a day in which women are involved. The most important part of the Super Bowl is the halftime show. The creativity and marketing that goes into the halftime performances and pyro-technics that make the halftime show a mini concert, have now become a very important time for women who arent really interested in the game, but are really interested in the halftime entertainment. With past performances from Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, etc, the halftime show is of great interest to many people watching the game on Super Bowl Sunday.

Third, the day of the big game is a day to eat. The creativity of the game day parties are no longer just a pizza and soft drinks. Big corporate parties for the game are now in rented hotel rooms, catered with prime rib, and fancy napkins. How has it come to this? Since the Super Bowl has so many corporate sponsors, the game has become a day to make business, in a little less formal fashion. Pizza parties are still the most popular food on the day of the big game, but barbecue rib are not a bad way to watch a football game either.

Overall, Super Bowl Sunday is a great day. I don't know if its worthy of a national holiday, but getting up and going to work the monday after the big game is a very hard thing to do. American needs Super Bowl Sunday, its part of our American culture that should never go away.
